Simpson Paper Book Covers

Paper sample books are a great way to choose a paper for a particular project. Paper companies give carte blanche to artists to design these books to show the paper at the greatest possible advantage. These covers are photoshop collages using many different paintings by different painters to create a new work of art. Dali, Magritte and Leonardo feature prominently in these pieces, with a touch of Hieronymus Bosch.

Design Projects

Several individual projects that show Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign skills. Coke blasts off for the Moon. Smokey Robinson has a background pattern that lists all of the songs he has written over the years. The skeleton expresses my feelings about war. Venus de Milo is in a de Chirico type of landscape. AIGA uses too many typefaces but is still very readable. The Ritz ad was drawn in Illustrator, including the background pattern.

Salvadore Dali Invitation

I once had the pleasure of seeing Salvadore Dali’s jewelry designs in person, when a student at Virginia Commonwealth University. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts had his pieces on display. This was a rare occasion, as his jewelry collection is now permanently housed at the Dalí Museum in the small coastal town of Figueres, just north of Barcelona, Spain. For this invitation, a photograph of Dali was sketched as a line drawing. On the inside, the pieces are arranged to create faces with a plane running through the three inside panels. The effect is slightly surrealistic.

Death Sauce

This music video was a group project. Our group was cooperative and hard-working, and its’ members brought a great deal of creativity and skill. My part was producer and screenwriter. The story was developed by Patrice and the screenplay was written by me. As producer it was my job to create shot lists, cast lists, costume lists, and document all aspects of the production. In the end we were able to shoot the video in one morning, and part of an afternoon because everything had been so well organized and each member did their part. Patrice was an excellent director, and Bridget’s steady hand on the camera showed great skill. Brandy and Alyson were tireless scouting locations and props. Nathan and Patrice did a great job on the editing, and without Jonah we would not have had a cast.

Drawing Flies

“Don’t Drink and Fly” is the title of this Flash animation. I drew each fly in Adobe Illustrator with movable wings and tentacles, and all the glasses and fruit. Working in Flash is very enjoyable and this animation seemed to evolve on it’s own. It won second place for animation at the IRSC Exhibition in 2011.

Metropolis Movie Trailer Original Score

The movie trailer was downloaded from the internet, and the soundtrack was removed. Using Logic Pro 9, a new soundtrack designed for Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound was created. It was a fun and challenging task to find the right sounds for each clip. The booming sounds produced by the surround sound system will be missing from this internet version.
